Part of the series «Chamber Music Compact» – Chiaroscuro Quartet plays 7 concerts in 3 days.

Joseph Haydn: String Quartet G minor op. 20 no. 3, Hob. III:33

Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet E minor op. 59 no. 2

Duration approx. 70 minutes

Joseph Haydn's G minor quartet wears a baroque guise with its contrapuntal main themes and then takes all kinds of unexpected turns. In this quartet from 1772, Haydn experiments with unheard-of compositional and formal ideas that are groundbreaking for the string quartet genre, which had only just emerged.

Two abrupt chordal strokes open the first movement of Beethoven's Quartet in E minor, which takes Haydn's tendency towards equality between the four voices just as far as the spiritual, almost prayer-like second movement, which explores the expressive spectrum in an inward direction.

The third movement is also completely new, with a vital dance rhythm that almost seems to burst the boundaries of the score. The Presto finale begins with the proud march-like rondo theme in a daring C major, which soon dives into E minor and ends in a wild tarantella.

Chiaroscuro Quartet:

Alina Ibragimova, violin

Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux, violin

Emilie Hörnlund, viola

Claire Thirion, violoncello
