Kirche St. Georg, Ernen

Chiaroscuro Quartet

Part of the series «Chamber Music Compact» – Chiaroscuro Quartet plays 7 concerts in 3 days.

Joseph Haydn: String Quartet E flat major op. 20 no. 1, Hob. III:31

Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet C major op. 59 no. 3

Duration approx. 65 minutes

An equal dialogue between the four instruments can be observed in the opening movement of the Quartet in E flat major, which ends in the lively final movement just like a civilised discussion: in pianissimo. The work is entirely in a friendly, singing character and is the ideal embodiment of the new string quartet genre (at that time in 1772), which was increasingly being stylised as the highest art form.

Beethoven's C major quartet, written over 30 years later, is completely different: then as now, the harmonic search at the beginning is astonishing, before a lively C major breaks through. The second movement creates a romantic ballad-like atmosphere of a mystical past, and the third movement imagines courtly life in a graceful minuet. The lively final fugue concludes the series of Opus 59 with its symphonic approach.

Chiaroscuro Quartet:
