HOHEN RÄTIEN

HOHEN RÄTIEN, Sils im Domleschg

Neither a fortress nor a noble castle.

Then what? HOHEN RÄTIEN has been a mystery for centuries. The large plateau of Hohen Rätien is one of the oldest settlement sites still in use in Switzerland - an extraordinary cultural asset in Graubünden with an eventful 4000 year old history.

HOHEN RÄTIEN lies in the middle of the transalpine flow of traffic and goods over the Splügen Pass. Traces of settlement from the Bronze and Iron Ages (2500-800 B.C.), remains of a Roman road station, late antique sacral buildings with baptistery and baptismal font from the 5th century and the church of St. Johann and Viktor, the centre of a large parish testify to a highly varied history. The inner castle, presumably a protected transshipment area with a packer hostel and much more can still be discovered today. A wonderful view of the Domleschg, the Heinzenberg and the Viamala gorge and cosy squares at the fountain invite you to linger and let yourself be carried away into times long gone.
